Languages at Chidlow
At Chidlow Primary School, students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 are given the opportunity to learn Italian as a second language. The students participate in one lesson a week with our specialist language teacher Mrs Nora Sidoruk, who is more commonly addressed as Signora Nora by the students. Students learn to communicate in Italian as well as exploring similarities and differences between the Italian culture and way of life and our own.
Language learning broadens students’ horizons to include the personal, social, and employment opportunities that an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world presents. The interdependence of countries means that people in all spheres of life have to be able to negotiate experiences and meanings across languages and cultures. Despite English being one of the world’s main languages, a capability only in English is not sufficient, and it is the norm in most parts of the world to be bilingual or plurilingual.
The main principal of the Languages curriculum is that learning to communicate in two or more languages is a rich, challenging experience of engaging with and participating in the diversity of our interconnected world.
