English at Chidlow
The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate with and build relationships with others and with the world around them. The study of English helps young people develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. It helps them become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society.
The English curriculum includes a range of interrelated areas including:
- Reading and Viewing
- Spelling and Phonics
- Writing and Handwriting
- Grammar and Punctuation
- Speaking and Listening
At Chidlow Primary School we are committed to providing a high quality English curriculum that meets the expectations of the Western Australian curriculum and is specifically tailored to the needs of the students. A consistent whole school approach continues to be developed and refined to ensure all students are given every opportunity to become successful literacy learners. Literacy Blocks have been established and ensure common coverage of the curriculum through successful whole school programs such as Guided Reading, Sounds Write and Literacy Pro.
An explicit instructional model I Do, You Do, We Do is used to support teachers to plan for highly effective instruction and using clear targetted feedback to support students in their learning. Whole school assessment helps to track student progress and provide teachers with clear direction for their teaching and learning programs. Teachers work collaboratively to implement whole school programs and continually review, develop and refine these programs to ensure students’ needs are met.
